Jetted Tub Hints - and Things to Consider Before Purchasing

Whirlpool tub selection:

Decide if you would like a one or two-person tub. Two-person tubs generally take a lot more water and space. We like to talk most people out of purchasing a two person tub. You might consider purchasing a hot tub if you think that you will use a two person tub a lot.

Verify that you have an adequate water heater to meet the water requirements of the tub. Generally one should figure that 65% of the tub's capacity will be hot water. If a tub has a capacity of 60 gallons then you will need at least 40 gallons of hot (at 140 degree) water. Realize that it will then take time to reheat the heater for the rest of the house/family. If your water heater does not meet your needs then you should either consider a smaller tub or a larger water heater or consider adding an instant, tankless heater leading to (just) your new tub. The less amount of water your tub has, the lower the cost of usage.

Measure the available area to insure that the dimensions of the selected tub will fit in the house.

Insure that your electrical panel has adequate space/size for the proper sized circuit.

Make sure the jets are in the location that best meet your comfort needs.

Make sure that the pump will be in an accessible location.

Consider an in-line heater to continually maintain your bath's water temperature but most of the time this is a waste of money as you can simply add a small amount of hot water should the temperature go down too much.

Consider adding mood lights in and around your tub area to create the right atmosphere.

Make sure whirlpool tub has an adequate depth for comfortable bathing.

Make sure that the tub you choose will fit into the available space.

Provide electrical wiring as required by State Code and as per manufacturer's recommendations.

Whirlpool Installation Hints:

Make sure the perimeter of the tub is properly supported.

Set the tub in a mud base for a solid bottom, which provides support.

Provide a GFI electrical circuit for the tub on an isolated circuit.

Create an access panel or purchase a removable skirt to allow access to the pump, controls and drain.

Whirlpool Tub Care and Maintenance Suggestions:

Never use abrasive cleaners on your whirlpool tub. Only use products that you would consider using on glass (and are designed for plastics should you purchase an acrylic or fiberglass tub).

To clean the jet plumbing components, fill tub with water and add a small amount of dishwasher detergent after filling tub, run pump for at least seven minutes prior to draining.

Use cleaning products that are specifically designed for fiberglass or acrylics.

Whirlpool Color Selection Suggestions:

White is best overall, easiest to keep clean.

Light colors are second best for showing spots and maintenance.

Black and dark colors generally show off the dirt a lot more than white or light colors.

For resale value, consider that lighter colored fixtures generally provide better resale as we have found that more people prefer lighter colored fixtures.
